First books
Humans have always strived to create something: they created paintings and sculptures, built palaces and temples. But for humans, their thoughts were the most valuable thing. They wanted to preserve them and pass them on to future generations. That is why people invented books. The first books were clay tablets that appeared in Mesopotamia five thousand years ago.
Starting in 3500 BC, the ancient Sumerians molded bricks and tablets from clay, wrote the texts of their books and other documents on them in cursive, then fired them in a kiln and used them as books.
Some "books" consisted of several "pages" — several clay tablets of the same size. Each tablet had a page number and the title of the book. In libraries, "books" were stored by field of knowledge. To find the right book, they referred to "catalogues" that indicated the title of the book, the number of lines on the tablet, and the building and shelf where it was located. The book tablets were stored in separate wooden boxes.
